About MASRC

The Manitoba Aboriginal Sport & Recreation Council (MASRC) is a youth oriented, non-profit agency in business to service the Aboriginal Community through sport, recreational, educational and cultural activities.

Currently MASRC is busy preparing for the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) which will be held in the Cowichan Valley this August. This is a huge but tremendously important undertaking for Manitoba’s Aboriginal Youth as these Games reflect the traditions of Indigenous cultures, using athletic competition to teach holistic principles integral to sport-physical, spiritual and mental, emotional and intellectual well being while reinforcing family and cultural values.

North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)

In August 2008, approximately 6,000 Indigenous participants will compete in 16 contemporary and traditional sports, along with 3,000 contestants in the cultural components of the Games. Along with 3,000 volunteers, over 20,000 participants and spectators from across North America are expected to travel to the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island to participate in the 2008 North American Indigenous Games held from August 3 – 10, an international celebration of youth, sport and culture.

The NAIG is the largest multi-sport and cultural event hosted in Canada and the United States specifically targeted for Aboriginal/Native American populations. In Canada it is a fundamental component of the Aboriginal sport movement as it has effected positive change in the health and well being of Aboriginal peoples.
